Tenerife PWA World Cup Day 3

Day 3: Opening 5 Heats of the Men's Single Elimination Completed

The Men's Single Elimination began on Day 3 of the 2019 Tenerife PWA World Cup in small and generally light conditions, while with the competition beginning just after low tide the sailors had to do their best to dodge the El Cabezo rocks in the opening few heats. Although the waves were small there was still some decent action on offer with the sailors being given 16 minutes to land their best jump and link together their best 2 waves. After a promising start conditions then deteriorated as the tide filled in and only the opening 5 heats were completed on a day of slow progress.

Single Elimination

Camille Juban (Quatro / S2Maui) set the highest heat of the first round against Adam Warchol (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) in Heat 1a as he set a score of 18.43 points. Juban also earned the joint highest single wave score - 7 points - after tweaking a frontside air and showing off vert snaps, while also landing a stylish backloop, which was the highest single jump of the day. Meanwhile, Miguel Chapuis (JP / NeilPryde) comfortably dispatched of Logan Groenne (Goya Windsurfing) to also book his place in the second round. 

In Heat 2 Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) and Ben Proffitt (Simmer / Simmer Sails) easily navigated their way past Henri Kolberg (Starboard / Hot Sails Maui / Maui Ultra Fins) and Takara Ishii (RRD / RRD Sails) respectively. Gollito landed a radical shifty, while also coming agonisingly close to sailing away from the only double forward of the day, while Proffitt equalled Juban’s highest wave score - 7 points - with three well-timed aggressive snaps. 

Arthur Arutkin (Fanatic / Duotone) looked in impressive form in Heat 3 as the young Frenchman eased his way past Laurin Schmuth (Goya Windsurfing) with the 22-year-olds wave riding in particular being in a different league. Meanwhile, Baptiste Cloarec (Severne / Severne Sails) came out on top against fellow countryman Antony Ruenes (Tabou / GA Sails) to progress.

Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Duotone), who is making his first appearance of the season, set the fourth highest wave score of the day - 6.87 points - in tricky conditions and his experience proved far too much for debutant - Tomer Shamgar - while Martin ten Hoeve produced to solid wave scores after showing an aggressive approach in the small waves to win a close heat against Pablo Ramirez (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg).

The final heat of the day turned out to be Heat 5 where Antoine Martin (JP / NeilPryde) and Loïck Lesauvage (Goya Windsurfing) proved too strong for Max Horchgrassl (Severne / Severne Sails) Alex Grand-Guillot (Fanatic / Duotone).

After the completion of Heat 5 the conditions then deteriorated, and despite patiently waiting until after 7pm, the wind and waves never became suitable again, so the sailors were released for the day. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 11:30am (GMT+1) with a first possible start at 12pm, but based on the forecast the next couple of days do not look too promising on paper with lighter winds and smaller waves predicted.
